Lawson;s Dry Hills is a medium-sized Marlborough Wine Company committed to the production of premium Marlborough wines.

The company was founded in 1992 by Ross and Barbara Lawson when they decided to make wine themselves rather than on-selling the grapes they had been growing since 1980.

The wines have been well received, with many show successes. Recent vintages of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer show excellent depth of fruit and complexity.

The bussines has grown from processing 15 tonnes of grapes in 1992 to 700 tonnes at present (equivalent to 50,000 cases).

The company has a modern winery, 140 tonnes per day can be handled during vintage and from 2004, all wine has been bottled at the winery.

Lying east/west and enjoying a maritime climate, the Wairau River Valley maximises the wonderfully long clear sunny days, which are especially evident during the autumn ripening period. These long days are balanced by cooler nights, lengthening the ripening process and in turn, intensifying the flavours in the fruit and subsequently the wine.

Lawson's Dry Hills harvest grapes from right across the spectrum of soil types ranging from light stony soils to heavy loams including quite a large proportion of clay-based soils.

A variety of canopy management techniques are used including crop level management exposing some areas to more or less direct sunlight etc. and trellising systems generally, to give the desired qualities.
